Katelyn, Conner and Caleb!

March 2005

Katelyn nursed her Pooh today. She was copying me as I took care of Conner. She pulled up a stool and got ready to nurse. By then Conner had decided he was done eating but Katelyn insisted that we needed to be alike... so I had to put Conner into position and pretend to nurse while she nursed Pooh.

After nursing, Pooh got to ride in the swing (properly buckled in, of course). She didn't like it when Conner displaced Pooh so we (Katelyn, Pooh and me) played "this little piggy" on the couch instead.

Tonight Katelyn just didn't want to fall asleep. She's doing so well at naptime so this was very frustrating. At naptime lately we read a book together and then she reads and draws on her magna-doodle while I leave the room. She quietly plays on her bed until she calmly falls asleep. It's so easy this way.

But tonight was a different story... she just kept wanting to climb out of bed. She'd read a story with Dad, they'd prayed, she waited for him to leave the room and then after a while, followed him out of the room. And when I went to put her back, she was super full of energy. She just didn't want to lay down.

After trying in vain to just put her back into bed, I finally laid down with her until she calmed back down. (She'd reached the point of hysterics before that which was not going to help her go to sleep!) As I was laying there, I thought back to her naptime and wondered why bedtime was so hard but naptime was rather easy. Then I decided to copy naptime... I turned on the light, found her magna-doodle and a few books, put some water in her sippy and tucked her in with it all. Then I turned out the lights, kissed her goodnight (she said, "Night") and walked out. Piece of cake. She fell asleep.

Same thing after she woke up to go potty. Once again it was easy. Now why couldn't I figure this out before the hysterics?

It does make me feel better. Eric's surgery is scheduled for March 22. For those first few weeks after the surgery, I'm going to be esentially single parenting (along with caring for Eric) and that could be a difficult time. I used to sharing at least some things with Eric. Even though he can't do a lot right now because of his ankle, he can do things like bedtime. Right after the surgery, he won't even be able to do that. I've taken over the bedtime stuff already except for the initial putting Katelyn to bed but I do occasionally call on him if Conner and Katelyn both wake up or want out of bed at the same time. I won't have that after the surgery. So knowing that Katelyn and I are figuring out a routine that she will cooperate with is very comforting.

Eric was out late tonight so it was just the kids and I at bedtime. Katelyn wanted me to sit on her bed after I turned her light out so I did as I nursed Conner. He finished up nursing and wanted to be soothed to sleep so I started rocking him and "spanking" him. I had to laugh though when Katelyn promply sat up, scooched to the edge of the bed (so her legs were hanging off just like mine) and started doing the same to Pooh. She took a quick moment to "nurse" him (complete with smacking sounds and her shirt lifted up) and then went back to nursing, patting and shushing. Just like Mom.

I just had to let her do that... bedtime was put off a little so we could have a little bonding time. She later snuggled in to bed and was just about to fall asleep when her Dad got home.

It was adorable. She jumped up in her bed, squealed, slid out of bed and excitedly signed "Dad! Dad! Dad!" I told her that she needed to lie down because Dad would come up to say goodnight. She did, he did and we finally were able to get her to sleep.

Conner rolled from back to front this evening just before bed. He was trying to get his purple puppy (it's attached to his pacifier and he loves to chew it) and it fell off his chest. He even managed to get his arm out from under him.

Then he rolled back to his back. Not a complete roll though. But that will come.
