Katelyn, Conner and Caleb!

Negotiating a late, late, late, late night snack with a 2 year old is, well, interesting.

She asked for spagettios. I said it was too messy and we could do that for lunch instead.
She asked for candy. I said no.
She asked for a bottle of gaterade, I pointed out that it wasn't food and she wanted food.
I suggested cheese crackers (usually a favorite) and she said no.
We finally agreed on... frozen peas. Yep. Peas. Right out of the freezer, no need to heat them up, just pour them into a bowl.

    And pears.

Both kids are curretly awake and eating pears and frozen peas in the kitchen.

    Life is interesting.

Another bump for Conner (poor boy). He made his way over to visit his friend again. :D I took him back home the first time but he ran right back over where we were invited inside. Conner thought it was great!

But while we were there Conner tripped over his own feet and into a glider ottoman. He hit right on his cheekbone just below the outside corner of his ete. It looks like it's going to bruise but we were able to keep ice on it long enough to minimize the goose egg that was showing up.

    Definitely a boy here!

Ok... this just upsets me. I can't do much about it from where I am but I can spread the word.

    http://prayforkatie.blogspot.com/

(copy and paste the link into your browser window)

I first read about this young girl when it was on the MSNBC news page. I was shocked. And I'm even more shocked the longer this goes on. Basically, pray hard that your child never has cancer where you decide you want a second opinion about treatment.

This girl's parents decided to ask for a second opinion about what course of treatment to take and told their primary doc that they were going to do so. He immediately called CPS and said that they were refusing their daughter medical care and that she would die within a week if she did not start the treatment he wanted immediately.

CPS took her (and her two brothers) and then didn't start treatment for 45 days!!! So much for start immediately and die within a week, huh?

It turns out that her primary doc isn't even an expert in cancer treatment (they wanted a second opinion from a specialist). And while she's immunocompromised, they have placed her in a foster care home with sick kids (very bad when she can't fight off infections well right now) and her foster parents do things with her like take her to football games where she'll have to deal with who knows what germs.

There's more to it but if I keep typing this'll turn into a huge rant (not that it isn't already).

The frustrating thing is that this is not the first case I've heard of where doctors have called CPS when parents dared to question the prescribed treatment. And each time, it's not been a case of the parents saying, "No, we will not treat our child." It's been the parents saying, "Is this the best method of treating? I'd like to know more. Can we talk to someone with more experience?"

It's started already... Conner is trying to sneak out of the house to visit girls. Luckily for me, he's not very good at it yet. He can only get out if someone else opens the door. But when that door opens you'd better watch out. He's quick!

Usually I catch him and bring him into the house but this time (Wednesday evening) I decided to grab the camera and see where he would go. He carefully went down the sidewalk, down the driveway, through the culdisac, up the curb, through the grass, around the planter, down the sidewalk, up the steps and stopped at the door to his friend Ainslie's house. Unfortunately, she wasn't there that evening because of play practice. So I took Katelyn and Conner down to the bike path to take a walk. Conner struggled and cried the entire way to the path because he wanted to go back to Ainslie's house. (Does this count as his first crush?)

We all walked the entire way down to the playground. Even Conner! It was rather slow going but he had a lot of fun. Katelyn took two trips down the slide and then we headed back home because it was getting dark. Conner walked part of the way back but I decided to carry him after he repeatedly turned around to go follow doggies that were going the opposite direction.

Katelyn learned about consequences on that trip. And before too. I told her that she had to have clothes on to go outside. She agreed but wanted Dad to help her. Ok. But after she took her clothes to Dad, she wasn't letting him help her. So I told her that she could either go to bed or get her clothes on and go for a walk. She still didn't want clothes on so I calmly picked her up and took her to bed. Boy, she sure didn't like that! She got down, picked up her clothes and put them on very fast.

Then when we were out on the walk, we saw two very cute, very little dogs. They didn't have a puppy look to them but they couldn't have been over 6 inches tall. The man walking them kindly let Katelyn pet them. She said no. So after I pet them and asked her again if she wanted to (No) he continued on his walk. Katelyn cried big ol' tears from that. We discussed that when you answer "No" that it means you don't want to do it. Then I told her that this was called a consequence. She didn't like that very much at all.

Conner had a goofy milestone today. He managed to drink from his sippy with tipping it (which may have been a first) and even did it while walking! Ok... do all parents think about things like this as a milestone?

Eric had a rough day at work today. Just pray for him and the situation. Thanks.

Katelyn had a friend knock on the door and ask if she could come out to play today. That was a first, I think. Gannon was so cute about it though. I told him that Katelyn was napping and he said, "No she isn't. I saw her in the window." Sure enough, she had woken up from her nap. So we got shorts, socks and shoes onto her and she went outside. But by that time Gannon had left his house for an activity and was no longer available. But she and Conner were able to play with Ainslie instead so they were very happy. (Thanks Ainslie!)

A great thing about her waking up was that Conner was in the room with her and she didn't wake him up when she woke up! This is a great step towards him being able to sleep in there. Now to get to the point where they can both fall asleep in there on their own without keeping each other up. I'm not expecting that any time soon but this was a movement in the right direction.

Conner has been in that room for a little under a month now. We took down the crib and changing table and took out the bed frame for the twin bed after we got back from Pennsic. That left the box spring and mattress in there for Conner and Katelyn is sleeping on the bottom bunk of the bunk beds. It's a little crowded with two twin beds taking up floor space but not as crowded as it was with two twins and a crib and changing table. This is much better.

I've been exhausted lately. Conner just hasn't been sleeping as well. We're trying to keep him up in the morning so that he'll sleep in the afternoon at least close to when Katelyn sleeps. I get a break then and get to do my bible study and Conner can start sleeping on more of a schedule. I'm also trying to get him to go to bed earlier then midnight. So far it's working a bit... he's alseep right now which is a good sign. But his sleep in the wee hours of the morning haven't been that good.

Saturday night I figure I got about 3 hours of sleep. Try going to church with that. It's not fun and I was a bit late getting there because I kept trying to sleep in.

Last night was better but I'm still very tired today. I told the kids to not bother me because I was taking a nap and let them play downstairs. That gave me about half an hour of sleep this morning. Katelyn seemed to understand the mom is taking a nap concept fairly well. Maybe I can use it in the future? This is the first time I've tried it so I was very pleased.

Hoo boy do I have a smart little son!

Conner has decided that his sister's hair is really cool. He's always trying to steal it for himself... that is, he pulls it. Which Katelyn (understandably) doesn't like much. I suggested to Katelyn that today we braid it so that Conner wouldn't pull it. We already know that ponytails don't work to disuade boys (Josh *really* likes to pull ponytails) so I thought braids might work. She agreed and picked out some hairband from her hairband box.

I told her I was going to find a brush and went to do that. While I was doing it, Conner took off also... he went around the stairs the opposite direction of me and climbed upstairs. I thought he was looking for me so when he fussed, I just called to him to try to get him to come downstairs while I braided one side of Katelyn's hair.

But he didn't stop fussing so when I was done with the one side, I went up to get him. He was standing in the hallway holding a brush and wondering why I hadn't come up to get it from him! What a kind, thoughtful (and very smart) brother to go get a brush for his sister and mommy!

I took him downstairs, finished braiding Katelyn's hair and then took Conner intot he bathroom where he sat at the sink and watched me brush my hair with the brush he'd found. Big smiles there!!!

Can you believe he's already 11 months old? Wow.

I finally got a nap in and boy did it feel good!

Grandma's funeral was yesterday and we were on the go all day as a result. Good on the go but still, it was super busy.

The funeral was in the morning. It was a very nice though short service. Pastor did a great job.

Then we went to the cemetary. It brought back memories from when my Grandpa S. died. I spent the day at the house that my parents now own, which was then my grandparents house. It's right across from the cemetary so my dad ran over to get me right before the graveside part of the service. We stood behind and a litle to the side of every body so that I could see what was happening. Then we stayed and watched Grandpa's casket be lowered. Dad likes to stick around and make sure everything is being done right. That has now become tradition for me and I've been there for each of my grandparents now. I'm glad my dad was there though... the casket hadn't been locked shut yet and he was able to catch it before it was too late.

Then we went to Grandma's room to see if the grandkids wanted anything of Grandma's that was left. I took a couple of items but not many. That felt odd.

Sweetie (the cat) came in to see us and to look for Grandma. We talked to one of the workers there (one that Grandma really loved and who loved Grandma right back) and he said that he hadn't see sweetie at all since Grandma died. Apparently she's greiving too. The poor cat spent the night after Grandma's death sitting in front of the door to her room wanting to go in there to sleep on Grandma's bed. She snuggled up to Grandma after Grandma died too.

After that, there was just enough time to change and go to meet the family to go out to eat. We enjoyed that... Das Essenhaus if you're from the area. It's a wonderful place. Katelyn really enjoyed the area and had fun looking for horses.

Katelyn didn't get a real nap yesterday so she's been exhausted today. Little things have really set her off. So after Bible Study and lunch, I put her down for a nap. She was laying her head down while we read which is a true sign of tiredness for her! She's totally zonked out right now.

Conner did take a nap yesterday but the schedule has been rough for him. He's pretty tired too. But not as tired.

I'm having a blah day today... it's hard to get motivated! I think I'm going to turn down the a/c and see if that helps.

Visitation is tonight. The funeral is tomorrow morning. Morning makes things difficult because my normal babysitters are all in school.

I don't think Katelyn took a nap today. She went to her room for a while but I don't think that she slept. That'll make things difficult for tonight. I might have to leave early. It looks like I'll be going with the two kids by myself. Eric called and said he might not be able to leave work on time tonight. He explained a little of what was going on but he lost me in the explaination. So just pray for him please!

Katelyn pulled a cute one today... we were eating dinner with my parents and Katelyn all of a sudden started hitting her spoon on the table. The spoon was totally vertical with the tip of the spoon part hitting the table. We were trying to get her to stop when she started making noise and showing us her spoon. So we started to remind her to use her inside voice... then I suddenl realized that the spon she was using had Peter Rabbit on the end and she was trying to tell us that she was trying to make the rabbit jump. So we allowed the rabbit to jump for the rest of the meal. We're wondering now what she'll do when she uses a Peter Rabbit plate...

    :D

Conner took another milestone... he's well into walking now. And today when we were going out to the car to go to my parent's house, I let him come out of the house on his own. Normally he turns around and crawls down the steps backwards. Not today though... he grabbed the door frame and stepped down like a big boy. Then carefully toddled over to the step off the porch and had grabbed the porch railing and was ready to step down there too when his Dad grabbed him. We were worried that he'd hit his head on the sidewalk again and we didn't need blood just before leaving the house.

Speaking of which... that happened on Thursday. Just as Katelyn and Conner and I were ready to step out the door to leave, Conner came out to me with blood streaming down his chin. He wasn't in pain (or wasn't crying like he was) so I grabbed a wet paper towel to find out what was wrong. Apparently he'd tripped and cut his lip with a tooth. The poor guy... he's been beating up on himself this last week!

Right now he's standing next to me as I type... He found a pair of his sister's underwear and is trying to put it on his head like a hat... He's caught on to the little brother tricks early! (Ok... which uncle taught him this?)

Wow... a whole month since I updated! I didn't realize it was that long.

Pennsic was great! I'll update on that later.

Conner is walking now. We're so pleased with him. The technical date for him starting walking was last week Friday. That was when he started trying it on his own instead of us trying to stand him up, let go and then encourage him to take a step. He started with just standing at an object and then taking off across the room and now can make it completely across a room. Time to move to the walker side of the nursery!

Two days ago he pulled a cute one... the phone was ringing and he picked up a reciever and held it up to his ear and then brought it to me. The phone was backwards and upside down but he sure knew what he was supposed to do with it. I was reading to Katelyn so I originally wasn't going to pick it up but since he brought it to me, I answered it. It was his Aunt Sandi and she was rather surprised that Conner had brought me the phone.

    Yep, he's growing up!

On Monday of last week Conner bumped his head on the sidewalk. He was trying to carefully crawl down the step from our porch to our side walk but didn't want to turn around backwards. He ended up with a light scrape. It scabbed over so it looked big but the scab was really thin and flexible. It came off Thursday when Katelyn touched it gently with her finger. I'd been putting neosporin on it to soften it because it was already coming off on it's own and apparently that was enough.

But then on Wednesday Conner was climbing up the stairs and Arthur was a little too enthusiastic and bumped into him. Conner was only a couple of steps high but he fell and landed on his forehead. Big goose egg. We called the doc because one pupil wasn't responding as well as the other. After discussing it, we decided to simply keep an eye on him for the night and see how he did. There weren't any other signs of problems and he did well through the night. There's still some left overs of the goose egg but you can only really see it if you carefully compare both sides of his forehead.

He's defintely a boy! Katelyn had bumps but they didn't seem to be quite so frequent or as obvious.
