Katelyn, Conner and Caleb!

    Wow.

Totally out of the blue this evening, Katelyn told me, "Mommy, you need to have a clean heart to go to heaven and live with Grandma Shields."

It took me a bit by surprise.

But as we talked more, she told me that a dirty heart has sin. Sin is doing things like being mean to your brother or your cousin or your mommy or daddy. And that to get a clean heart you invite Jesus inside.

Then she got a little sketchy on the details but she knows that Jesus died so we can have a clean heart.

I asked her if she had invited Jesus to live inside and she told me no.

Later while we were talking to Eric, she told us that Grandma Shields has a clean heart because she is living with Jesus. And that Jesus came and took her hand and pulled her up to heaven.

I cried when I heard her say that.

We're going to talk to her about the details of salvation more before we ask her again about deciding for herself. But she sounds close.

    Wow.

Another prayer request before I go into news of the kids...

Dawn is a friend of mine who I met online who is currently in Kazakhstan trying to adopt her son. Her adoption was approved and all legal hoops had been jumped through except one... the 15 day waiting period. This is 15 days after the court date where the adoption can legally be appealed. An hour or so before she was to pick up her son from the orphanage - so just before the exact 15 days were up - a man showed up claiming to have power of attorney from the birth mother and was contesting the adoption. Dawn has been living in Kazahstan now waiting for a legal ruling from higher courts on her adoption. She has not seen her son during this time.

Today was supposed to be the court but for various wild (and amazingly unbelievable) reasons, the date has been postponed until the 19th. Pray that Dawn stays strong and that God will show his hand in a mighty way!

    Now about my kids...

Caleb continues to enjoy the freedom of being able to move to where *he* wants to go instead of being stuck wherever I put him. Today when the kids and I were waiting during Eric's therapy appointments, Conner was playing with Caleb by crawling to various parts of the room and waiting for Caleb to join him. There were giggles and grins from both boys. I really enjoy seeing them playing with each other so well. I pray that continues. They are so close in age that they'll either grow up to be best buds or best enemies.

Katelyn and Conner and I made butter last night. It tastes so sweet! I've been noticing the last few weeks that our milk is creamier then it was during the winter and we're getting more cream rising to the top. So I poured some of the cream off a few days ago and let it separate more. Then I carefully skimmed off the top cream and put it into the food processor. Katelyn and
Conner (as usual) watched carefully and tried to guess what I was making. Then they took turns running the food processor until I decided it was done.

I scraped it all out and let them taste and guess what it was. They guessed ice cream first. Then yogurt.... and frosting... I finally told them that it was butter. Conner promptly wanted to eat it all with a spoon. I let him lick off the scraper.

Katelyn ran up to Eric and told him "Milk makes butter!" That was my goal. That they learn that butter is made from milk. I was shocked when we went to IKEA a bit ago and cafeteria worker there told me that the meatballs didn't have wheat or flour in them... they used bread crumbs. But then Katelyn told me that her Dad's milk comes from Sam's Club and her milk comes from cows. But she was also 3 when she said that. Anyways... I'm determined that the kids learn at least some of where food comes from before it comes to the grocery store.

Plus it was just down right fun to do with them.

Now I should make them some gluten free bread (Bob's Red Mill has a superb mix!) so that they can enjoy their fresh butter.

    First a BIG prayer request:

Last Friday we got a call telling us that the bone marrow recipient from when Eric donated needed another donation. On Monday we found out that because of his head injury, Eric is not allowed to donate for the next year. Eric was just crushed when he heard that news.

We talked to the parents that evening and it was wonderful to talk to them but they could use prayers for their son.

Jonathon (the recipient) is 4 years old and has spent the last four months of his life in the hospital due to problems with his bone marrow no longer producing platelets. The last two weeks have been in ICU on a ventilator. Until he gets a new donation, blood transfusions are keeping him alive. It's been a rough time.

Please pray that a new donor is able to be found for Jonathon and that his body heals.

    Now for news about us.
Eric is still off of work and will be until at least the 17th. That's when we have another doctor appointment for him and will find out what the doc thinks of his progress. He's still very sound and light sensitive and too much of either of those can overwhelm him. Background noise of any kind makes it nearly impossible for him to think. He still has episodes of amnesia with his short term memory and those are especially hard on him. He'll be sitting somewhere other then the house and suddenly not be able to figure out where he is. Even if it's someplace he's familiar with like church.

Eric still goes to therapy 3x a week and is improving each week but it's a slow process.

I'd been asked how he was doing by someone who reads here so I thought I'd update everybody.

This evening Eric put Caleb into the Playschool car that we have and he rode around the livingroom in it while Conner pushed. Caleb just loved it. He grinned the entire time.

He's really enjoying his new mobility but his brother and sister are having to learn about putting favorite (not chewable) toys up and out of reach. Anything within a foot or so of the floor is fair game to Caleb. Yesterday Katelyn declared, "Legos are not chew toys Caleb!" as she pulled them out of his reach.

Caleb just made his first phone call. I just finished nursing him and set him down on the floor to wear himself out while I attempted to get some cleaning done.

Then I heard faint ringing and didn't think much of it until I heard, "Hello?"

That's when I looked over and saw him hanging on to the phone. I'm glad it was family that he called this late! I think he must have discovered the redial button.

    Does this kid slow down?

Caleb has been working today at doing pullups on the couch. He's crawling over to it (on hands and knees... consistently... finally) and then reaching up to the seat of the couch. He's up to "standing" on his knees and has even gotten onto one foot. Thankfully he's not managed to straighten either leg yet while bearing weight on it. I am NOT encouraging him to put weight on his feet yet! The older two kids are putting anything that they don't want him getting on there and I don't want him figuring out quite yet how to get to all that stuff.

However... Caleb is one very determined little boy...

Any guesses on how quickly he'll figure this one out? I'm afraid it's going to be much too soon for me. That's definitely a sign of a third time mom.

    Happy Birthday Laura!

(I already told her that today so it's OK that I am posting that so late tonight. But if you forgot, give her a call or an e-mail tomorrow to wish her a belated birthday.)

Caleb is at my feet as I'm typing this. He's been crawling all around the room and then sitting himself up to play with his shoelaces. Apparently they're very fun to pull on. He has a huge grin on his face. He's so proud of himself right now.
